Moving Checklist

Initial Stages of Move

  • Create a moving binder or folder to keep track of all moving-related documents.
  • Start sorting and decluttering your belongings.
  • Research and book a reputable moving company (e.g., We Move You).
  • Create an inventory of valuable items.
  • Notify your landlord or property manager of your move (if renting).
  • Begin collecting packing supplies (boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap).
  • Gather important documents (medical records, school records, etc.).
  • Plan a garage sale or donate unwanted items.
  • Schedule time off work for moving day if necessary.
  • Research and plan your new home’s layout.
  • Contact insurance companies to transfer or update policies (home, auto, etc.).

Begin Packing and Arranging Services

  • Start packing non-essential items (seasonal clothes, decorations, etc.).
  • Confirm moving details with the moving company.
  • Notify utilities of your move-out date and arrange for services to be stopped (electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.).
  • Change your address with the post office.
  • Notify banks, credit card companies, and other important institutions of your new address.
  • Continue packing, labeling boxes by room and content.
  • Arrange for childcare or pet care on moving day.
  • Plan meals to use up perishable food items.
  • Disassemble furniture and large items.
  • Return borrowed items and collect any that are borrowed from you.
  • Pack a “first-night” box with essentials (clothes, toiletries, important documents, snacks).
  • Confirm moving day details with the moving company.
  • Clean your current home, including appliances, bathrooms, and floors.
  • Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials that can’t be moved (paint, chemicals).

Before Moving Day

  • Finish packing all personal items.
  • Ensure all boxes are properly labeled.
  • Prepare payment and tips for the moving company.
  • Confirm final arrangements with the moving company.
  • Pack valuables and important documents separately to take with you.

On Moving Day

  • Do a final walkthrough of your current home to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Check all rooms, closets, cabinets, and outdoor areas.
  • Make sure utilities are turned off.
  • Leave keys and any necessary instructions for the new occupants.
  • Confirm arrival time and address with the moving company.

After the Move

  • Unpack essentials and set up basic living areas.
  • Verify that utilities are working in your new home.
  • Begin unpacking and organizing room by room.
  • Update your address with any remaining institutions (subscriptions, memberships, etc.).
  • Explore your new neighborhood and introduce yourself to neighbours.
